Although both isopropanol and ethanol isopropanol are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, their molecular structures differ. Isopropanol has the molecular formula CH3CH2CH2OH, making it a saturated three-carbon organic compound, while ethanol isopropanol has the molecular formula (CH3)2CHOH, making it an organic compound containing one chiral carbon atom.

 

Boiling points differ: Isopropanol boils at 97.2℃, while ethanol isopropanol boils at 82.4℃. At room temperature, isopropanol is a colorless, transparent liquid, while ethanol is a pale yellow liquid.

 

Solubility differs: Due to their different molecular structures, isopropanol and ethanol are differently soluble. Isopropanol has a solubility of 10.6% (by volume) in water, while ethanol isopropanol has a higher solubility, reaching 50% (by volume).

 

Acidity/Balance: Both isopropanol and ethanol are alcohols, possessing moderate acidity and capable of undergoing base-catalyzed reactions.
