Phenoxyethanol is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H10O2, synthesized by etherification of ethylene glycol and phenol.

Phenoxyethanol is a colorless, slightly viscous liquid with an aromatic odor. It is slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in ethanol and sodium hydroxide.

Phenoxyethanol has antibacterial properties (generally used in conjunction with quaternary ammonium salts) and is frequently used as a substitute for highly toxic sodium azide in biological buffer solutions because of its lower toxicity and chemical inactivity towards copper and lead. It commonly functions as a preservative in cosmetics, skincare products, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals.
